The 15th a fairway is framed on the left by a plantation of CORSICAN PINES. Bare stripped pinecones, resemble apple cores, are evidence of RED SQUIRRELS feeding. They also feed on fungi, fruit and berries. The Sefton Coast is one of the last strongholds of the Red Squirrel in England since the introduction of the American Grey Squirrel.
On warm summer days COMMON BLUE, MEADOW BROWN, SMALL COPPER and WALL BROWN BUTTERFIES can be observed along with dragonflies such as the FOUR-SPOTTED CHASER, RUDDY DARTER and the COMMON HAWKER.
In the quieter dunes near the shore SHELDUCKS cab be seen during the early morning, emerging form their nesting sites in rabbit burrows. These large, predominantly white, goose-like ducks breed in the dunes and crèche their young. A careful search in the dunes may also uncover the inconspicuous and nationally rare orchid, DUNE HELLEBORINE.
