Flora & Fauna - Hole By Hole Guide
  Holes 7 & 8

The closest point to the beach is the 7th tee. The view towards the sea overlooks high mobile dunes of the Birkdale Sandhills Local Nature Reserve managed by Sefton Council.

The beach is internationally important for migrating and overwintering wading birds such as KNOT, SANDERLING, GREY PLOVER, BAR-TAILED GODWIT and OYSTER CATCHERS. Flocks of over 20,000 Knot are recorded regularly during the winter months. The whole foreshore is designated as a Special Protection Area through the European Community Wild Birds Directive.

The bright yellow flowers of EVENING PRIMROSE are conspicuous near the 7th tee. This American flower is now widespread throughout the dunes following an introduction via Liverpool Docks in the 19th Century. The DARK GREEN FRITILLARY butterfly is a scarce species, but found commonly in the fixed dune grasslands on the Sefton Coast where its food plant, the HEATH DOG VIOLET, occurs.
